It is caused by cholera bacili (Vibrio cholerae) although it is diarrhoeal disease, but it is very dangerous due to toxin of cholera known as Exotoxin which is liberated in the Central Nervous System.

Toxin is liberated by Cholera bacilli which causes rice water stool, vomiting and dehydration and ultimately death occurs, if dehydration is not corrected.

The dehydration is very quick in the case of cholera.

Vibrio cholerae present in the lumen of the small intestine produce excotoxin.

ENVIRONMENT

1. Rainy Season and this disease will come along with rain during rainy season.

2.Poor sanitation causing lot of flies

3. Sale of cut fruits exposed to dust & flies.

HOST

1.All ages and both the sexes

2.Mobility

3. Low socio-economic people with poor hygiene

4. People taking contaminated water from shallow hand pump

5. Consumption of cut fruits exposed dust & flies.

Diagnosis:-
1.Patient passes rice watery stool without any effort

» Signs and symptoms of dehydration
» Feeble pulse,vomiting, low blood pressure
» History of passing stool very frequently.

Treatment:
By ORS and home fluids like rice water, tea, green coconut water Shikanj, Lassi and breast milk to babies, Daal ka paani, and other liquids to treat dehydration.

2.Proper disposal of stool, vomits and linens of patients

3.Refer the patient to the doctor of Primary Health Centre

Control:

1.Survey of the area to detect number of cases of Cholera

. Early diagnosis and treatment

. Notification informing about number of cholera cases.

Even if suspected that the patients are suffering from cholera it should be notified to the health officer who will take preventive measures to check the spread of cholerea in than neighbouring areas.

.Distribution of chlorine tablets for purification of water.
» Treatment centers should be established in case of epidemics where hlorine tablets and also ORS packets are available.

.Health education to the community regarding rehydration therapy.

ORS:-(Oral Rehydration Solution)
Composition of ORS

Sodium Chloride -3.5g,
Sodium Citrate -2.9g
Potassium Chloride-1.5g,
Glucose /sugar 20 g
Potable water 1 litre ORS can also be prepared by having one packet of ORS in one litre of potable water or one teaspoon of it in one glass of water.


Health Education:

lt is given to the community for the use of chlorinated water or use of chlorine tablets. Proper washing of hands after passing stool and before eating,proper sanitation, proper disposal of human excreta.

Open defaecation should be stopped.

Various food and hygiene raids should conducted to destroy food exposed to dust and flies.

People should beged not to take drinks having unclean ice i.e. ice made from unclean water.

They should take hot food not exposed to dust and flies and food should be kept covered.

Only that much quantity of food should be
prepared which can be consumed immediately.

Proper sanitation and personal hygiene is very important to check spread of cholera.
